Michael J. Berkeley Cup

Atlantic Golf Club

Several years ago, the Atlantic Golf Club and other East End golf clubs decided to create a competitive tournament for the caddies.  The four golf clubs which initially participated in the tournament were Atlantic Golf Club, Maidstone Club, National Golf Links, and East Hampton Golf Club.  Each team consisted of eight caddies competing in eight single matches and four best ball matches.  Although we were struggling to name this tournament, after the events of September 11, 2001, the name became obvious:  THE MCHAEL J. BERKELEY CUP.

Last year, Atlantic Golf Club hosted the annual competition of The Michael J. Berkeley Cup on October 1, 2008.  The number of participating golf clubs has grown from four in 2001 to eight in 2008.  The participating caddie teams represented the following golf clubs:  Atlantic Golf Club, The Bridge, Friars Head, East Hampton Golf Club, Maidstone Club, National Golf Links, Shinnecock and Sebonack.  Each team consisted of eight caddies; the aggregate top six best scores of each team determined the winner of The Michael J. Berkeley Cup.

Even though Michael was a member of Atlantic Golf Club, he had a special and unique relationship with the staff at Atlantic.  Michael was adored and respected by all the staff and caddies at Atlantic, and it is only fitting to name this tournament in his honor and memory, as the Michael J. Berkeley Cup.  This cup will be competed for each year and the winning team will hold the trophy for that year.
