The mission of the Michael J. Berkeley Foundation is to assist deserving minority youth in reaching their highest potential in the sport of golf through education, business ventures, or a professional golf career. Currently, the primary method by which we achieve this mission is through our annual Michael J. Berkeley Foundation Scholarship. The Foundation awards scholarships to full-time college students of color who personify Michael J. Berkeley's legacy. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular/community involvement, leadership/team skills, financial need, commendations, honors, written communication skills, essays, letters of recommendations and verbal communication skills pursuant to a telephonic interview.
In 2003, the Foundation awarded two $2,500 collegiate scholarships and sponsored two GOLFWORKS Interns for $2,500 each. In 2004, six full-time college students were awarded a $2,500 scholarship. In 2005, the Foundation increased its scholarship award to $3,000 and selected twelve Michael J. Berkeley Foundation Scholars out of eighteen finalists. In 2006, 18 applicants were selected to receive a $3,000 scholarship out of 25 finalists. Eleven of the eighteen scholars were first time recipients, six were second year recipients and one was a third year recipient.
In 2007, twenty applicants (10 young men and 10 young women) were selelcted to be Michael J Berkeley Foundation Scholars. Of the 20, half were first time recipients of the scholarship. iN 2008, 24 applicants were selected to receive a $3,000 scholarship out of 55 applicants. Ten were first time recipients. In 2009, 21 applicants were selected to receive a $3,000 scholarship out of 28 finalists. Ten of the scholars were first-time recipients.
THE APPLICATION
Applications must be postmarked by August 21, 2012 for scholarships awarded during the 2012-2013 academic
year. The scholarship committee will review all qualifying applications and select final candidates on the basis of
eligibility,quality of application, interest in the sport of golf,commitment to leadership and financial need.Finalists
will be contacted by September 1, 2012. All finalists will be interviewed by members of the Michael J. Berkeley
